Building Profilactic

Profilactic is a social media aggregator/lifestreaming service that pulls together just about everything you and your friends create online. This blog chronicles the processing of building it.

Clippings are back, IE issues remain
We were able to get everyone's clippings back, so that should be taken care of. Please let us know if you aren't seeing yours.

We are still working through a couple of IE display issues. Those should be fixed this weekend.
It's 2:55AM, do you know where your clippings are?
Yeah, neither do we. When we pushed out the new UI, we somehow managed to hide everyone's clippings.

If you had clippings before, don't despair. Your clippings are still in the db. If you didn't have clippings before, well, we've got nothing to say to you :)

Should have this resolved soon, but we're really tired right now.
New UI, tags on clippings and Friends
We just pushed out some new things that we think are pretty cool.

1. New and improved UI
We've cleaned up the UI quite a bit and made it look a little more finished. The previous look was, admittedly, pretty lame. We like this one much better.

2. Tags on clippings
We've added the ability to tag clippings. In addition, we have a nifty little tag chooser that displays all of your existing tags, so you can add them to new clippings with a single click.

3. Friends v0.9
We've built the foundation for all of the future Friends enhancements. Now, you can add other Profilactic members as Friends. And then... oh, wait, that's all you can do with Friends right now.

Of course, in the next few weeks, we'll be adding new Friends-related features like Friends' Mashup which pulls together all of your Friends' content into a single view.

4. My stuff dropdown menu
This is a very minor enhancement; however, now you can jump any of your pages (mashup, profile, clippings and friends) from the My Stuff menu in the header.

Please take a few minutes to kick around the new UI and features, then let us know what you think.

TechCrunch highlights another profile aggregator
ProfileLinker was highlighted on TechCrunch yesterday. Comments on the TC post compare it to Profilactic; however, like Spokeo or FindMeOn, ProfileLinker is not like Profilactic at all.

While it is great to be mentioned by readers of TechCrunch, it is a bit frustrating to be lumped in with sites like ProfileLinker, Spokeo and FindMeOn that are taking totally different approaches to digital life management.

Here is what I posted on TC as a response to that comparison:

"Drew, it is slightly similar to Profilactic; however, after signing up for the beta of ProfileLinker, I can tell you that they are really not much alike.

ProfileLinker is simply grouping profiles. Not that interesting IMNSHO. There needs to be a content angle as well if you want other people to care about viewing these pages. Also, they seem to limit you to a set of social networkings [I hate when I misspell stuff in comments!], rather than letting you create your own links.

Profilactic, on the other hand, allows you to group all of your profiles. But it also mashes up all of the content you create on all of those sites. It allows you to bookmark things about you from around the web. And it allows you to connect with friends and pull together all of their content, too.

We’re rolling out tweaks to the beta this weekend that will update the UI, an advantage I think we have over ProfileLinker, FindMeOn and Spokeo (no offense, guys), and add a couple of new features.

Maybe once we open the beta to the public, people will be able to see for themselves.

Adding new UI and tags for clippings
We are going to be rolling out a couple of new features this week.

The first is a revamped UI. It is not drastically different than the current one, just a bit cleaner. It also includes more tips and instructions to make using the site easier.

New UI for Profilactic.com

The other feature we are adding is tags for clippings. As someone who has close to 50 clippings, I quickly realized that we need a way to organize them. So you'll be able to tag your clippings with tags and (eventually) be able to sort by the tags.

We should have these changes rolled out this week or over the weekend.

BTW, until we push out the new UI changes, the blog template will look at little jacked up. Sorry.

What other sites to support?
I've gotten a lot of feedback from our beta users about sites that they'd like to see us support by default.

Here are a few of them that we hope to add over the next couple of weeks:

iLike (one of my personal favorites right now)
Pandora
Last.fm
ma.gnolia
twitter
ODEO

What other sites would you all like to see supported by default? Post them as a comment.

Add a clipping from anywhere
Just a quick reminder that you can add Clippings to Profilactic from anywhere on the web using our handy little browser shortcut.

Firefox users:
Drag this link up to your Bookmarks Toolbar.
IE users: Drag this link up to your Links bar

So, when you're scouring the web and find something to clip, you can use the shortcut to quickly add it to Profilactic.
Beta users, post your URLs
I've had several emails from our beta users asking to see other people's mashups (which bodes well for the upcoming Friends feature).

I don't want to post anyone's links without their permission, so if you'd like to share your mashup or profile or clippings with everyone, please post the URL as a comment to this post.

BTW, here are mine:

Accounting for misspellings
We've also registered "profileactic.com" to account for misspellings of Profilactic. I have found myself telling people that "it's like profile with actic at the end." Using that lame explanation, it is no wonder people sometimes misspell it.

Site is running smoothly again
Apparently our web host, Kattare, had quite an eventful weekend. They had a planned data center migration which was supposed to affect our site briefly. However, during that process, the Northwest was hit with some pretty nasty storms that knocked out power (and kept it out for several days).

So the site was pretty flaky as they got everything put back together; however, it appears to be back to normal.

All Atom feeds fully supported
Just wanted to post a quick update. We pushed out a fix for an issue we were having with some flavors of Atom feeds. So if you're importing Blogger RSS feeds, check your mashup. All of those feeds should be importing properly now. If not, please post a comment.

If you haven't set up your mashup yet, you can check out mine. I'm pulling in Blogger feeds from this blog and from my personal blog, sMoRTy71.com.

Reworked all CSS
What better way to spend a warm Saturday in Louisville than to rewrite all of the CSS for the site? I had built the prototypes and mock-ups with less-than-perfect CSS. Of course, the plan was always to make the changes to the CSS before coding a bunch of pages. Well, that plan kind of fell through...

So I ripped out all of the images that were creating the rounded corners all over the site and I replaced them with CSS versions.

This will make it much easier if we ever need to change the layout of the pages. Instead of changing dozens of graphics, we'll just need to change a couple of lines of CSS. Plus, it should make the site just a little bit faster.

Feature: Badges
Part of the first beta release of Profilactic.com is the ability to create badges that you can place on your website. The first two flavors that we support are a Mashup badge (all of the content you create mashed together in a single feed) and a Where to Find Me Online bage (links to all of your profiles and content in one view).

The default badges have the colors and look-and-feel of Profilactic.com; however, we are leaving in the CSS so that it can be tweaked to match your own site.

If you look in the right column of my personal website, you will see my WTFMO badge. I am still messing with the CSS; however, it is pretty cool to have a dynamic list that will automatically updated whenever I add a new site on Profilactic.com.

Features, features, features!
Completely contrary to the advice of groups like 37 Signals, I have been going feature crazy for the past few days. Once we got the beta up and running over the weekend (and I could use everything together), I kept coming up with enhancements, tweaks and new features that will make the product even better.

We'll be rolling lots of these things in over the next few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled.

It's beta time!
Later tonight and tomorrow, we will be begin sending out the first wave of beta invites for those who registered back in November.

We'll continue sending out the invites throughout the weekend.

How the beta will work
Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up on how the beta notification process is going to work this Friday (and over the weekend).

Because we have over 500 people signed up (and a couple hundred more on the waiting list), we are going to send out the invites in shifts. So, on Friday, 100 or so of you will receive instructions on how to log into the beta site and get started.

We'll monitor the site for a few hours and make sure everything is stable before sending out another batch of invites. We'll repeat this process throughout the weekend until all invites are sent out.

If you don't receive an invite, please check this blog to make sure we didn't blow something up first. Then, send us an e-mail at beta at profilactic dot com.

Spokeo and Iceflake
I noticed that Spokeo got a write up on TechCrunch yesterday. Like Profilactic, Spokeo is moving into the digital life aggregator category.

In the comments of the TechCrunch piece, the creators of Iceflake chimed in to say that they, too, were doing what Spokeo is doing.

I've signed up and played with both services and, while they are similar in the basic idea, the implementations are miles apart.

Good luck to the teams at Spokeo and Iceflake. I have a feeling this space is only going to get more crowded.
